Traditional ABA services are commonly delivered through a “tiered model,” meaning the BCBA designs and oversees treatment, but most direct therapy hours are carried out by behavior technicians or Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs). In many settings, families may interact with several different staff members over time due to scheduling changes, turnover, or clinic staffing structures. While tiered care can be effective, it often means the BCBA is spending less direct face-to-face time with the client and making clinical decisions based on indirect observation, supervision sessions, or data reviewed after sessions have already occurred.
With a direct BCBA model, families receive services directly from the clinician with the highest level of specialized training and certification in behavior analysis. This removes multiple layers between assessment, treatment planning, and implementation. Instead of information passing from the BCBA to technicians and then back again, the BCBA is continuously observing, analyzing, adjusting interventions, and responding in real time. This allows for more individualized care, greater consistency, stronger therapeutic rapport, and more nuanced clinical decision-making during complex situations such as desensitization, emotional regulation, adaptive living skills, and behavior reduction.
Direct BCBA services also reduce many of the challenges families commonly experience in larger clinic models, including frequent staff turnover, inconsistent implementation across providers, repeated retraining of new team members, and communication gaps between caregivers and clinical leadership. Families benefit from having a single highly trained clinician who deeply understands the learner’s goals, preferences, communication style, and support needs across home, school, and community settings.
This model is especially valuable for families seeking a more collaborative, relationship-centered, and individualized approach to ABA services, one that prioritizes clinical expertise, continuity of care, and meaningful progress in everyday life.
